The Best Time to Work Out

When is THE BEST TIME TO WORK OUT? We’ve tried them all – over lunch break, in the evening, first thing in the morning, late morning after some emails, etc. It’s an excellent idea to self-experiment and determine what time of day to work out is best for you.

However, the best time to work out is the time you can work out most consistently. For many, that’s the morning. And many of those people are not “morning people.”

So, When Is It?

If you were to ask me after reading the top articles and recommendations on Google, I would say, “in the morning.” Because the majority of successful people do. But, after years of experience as a fitness coach, I know that everyone is unique. There is no right or wrong time. Figure out what time you can work out consistently. 

We have a client who works out in the mornings because if she works out at night, she would be too energized to sleep. Another client works out in the evenings because it relieves stress from the day. He works out before dinner, takes a shower, eats, reads, and sleeps like a baby. The important thing is that they figured out the best time to work out for themselves.

Since everybody is unique, you tell me what the best time of day to work out is. You’ll be most successful by self-experimenting and tailoring your fitness schedule to your lifestyle. The best way to measure success is with consistency. Keep a calendar to track and control your Time Test Experiment. 

Just promise me that you will always remember to prioritize sleep. Don’t cut back on sleep to fit in exercise. Instead, cut out things like TV, social media, or video games to create more time in your day. Sleep is vitally important to your health.

The Time Test Experiment: When is Your Ideal Workout Time?

Start here to figure out what your ideal workout time is.

1. Begin by working out in the morning, even if you’re not a “morning person.” Give yourself at least one month to make this a habit since it won’t be easy at first.

2. If after one month you still need multiple alarms to wake up and you’re not finding time to work out, it’s time for the snooze challenge! Put your alarm clock on the opposite side of the room, so you have to get up to turn it off. Once you are up, gear up immediately (or sleep in your workout shorts).

3. Is the snooze challenge still not working after two weeks? Transition to an afternoon work out. Commit to changing into your workout clothes within 20 minutes of returning from the office. Set a timer and do this for one month!

4. If neither the morning or afternoon workout seems to be working, it’s time to evaluate. Can you squeeze in a workout during your lunch break? Does a later night workout fit your schedule better? Or, do you simply dislike your workouts? Are you bored? Are you lacking structure and not sure what to do every day? If you have a weak plan without variety, you won’t get the results you deserve and a plateau, boredom, or injury are inevitable.

Now Take Action

Just like self-help books don’t work, reading this article alone won’t help you find the best time to work out. Take action, schedule time for your workouts, and figure out what time of day is best for you to work out consistently.
