Couple Interview with The Yoga Nomads

We are excited to feature this couple interview with Anne and Brandon of The Yoga Nomads. In 2014, they decided to leave the corporate world behind to travel the world while focusing on their relationship, health, and yoga entrepreneurship. They where an inspiration to us when we decided to do the same in 2017!

Here’s the behind-the-scenes world of how two traveling yogis stay balanced together through self-love and nutrition.

1. Can you give me a quick overview of how you two met?

We met while selling software for Oracle Corp in Minneapolis nearly 9 years ago in 2010! It feels like we were living another life, and in many ways, we were!

2. When did you start practicing yoga together?

Brandon began his yoga journey first. He was actually my inspiration to find myself on a yoga mat. After I witnessed the transformation within him, I decided to give it a go.

We began practicing together shortly after (this was about 1 year into our relationship). We’d go to the studio together and check out new studios in our city, too.

3. Why is it meaningful to you both to practice yoga together as opposed to alone?

Yoga is a practice of coming back to center and connecting with yourself. It can be such an intimate act alone, so practicing together makes it that much more special. We love sharing this deeply personal and transformative practice with the one we love the most!

4. Were there any bad habits or imbalances that you had to overcome so that you could practice yoga together?

I think the hardest part was and is finding time in our busy schedules! Aligning calendars can be tricky when you’re self-employed and have a bit of a social life 😉 Prioritizing yoga dates and agreeing on what style and flow you want to practice is key!

5. What does your daily health and self-care routine look like?

Health to us is all encompassing. It’s not just the food we put into our bodies on a daily basis, but all the other ways we consume and nourish ourselves. We both do at least a 12-hour overnight fast, and begin our days with meditation, journaling, lemon water, tea, and a smoothie. We opt for no phones for at least the first hour upon waking if we can help it. Our smoothies are packed with all kinds of goodness, including a few supplements we’ve grown to trust over the years.

Getting some type of movement/activity in is key to a healthy routine! Whether it’s going for a walk outside, yoga class, rock climbing, foraging for mushrooms, or surfing (outdoors is always preferred as we’re both nature junkies!) We love to cook so we rarely dine out, but rather prepare most meals at home.

In addition to consuming good food and staying active, we both love to read and listen to podcasts. Of course we listen to some for fun/leisure, but we also have our go-to’s for learning and motivation. This is all part of a healthy routine!

6. How has your diets changed since you started the Facebook group ‘Listen to Your Gut: Digestive and Intuition Health‘?

Since learning that we are only as healthy as our gut, our diet has shifted slightly. We aren’t perfect, but most days avoiding the top gut inflammatory foods: gluten, dairy, sugar, corn, soy and alcohol helps us to feel our best!

7. Have the benefits of getting healthier together spilled over to other areas of your lives? 

Absolutely! Being healthy impacts all areas of our life. I think the clarity and energy we feel from making health a priority allow us to be the best versions of ourselves in business and otherwise! Without putting health first, we absolutely wouldn’t have been able to accomplish all we have at this point in our life. It just makes things easier and more fluid! Don’t you agree? 🙂

8. What advice do you have for couples who want to get healthy together?

Make it fun! It’s hard to begin a new habit no matter what it is. Being healthy together can be so rewarding and fun at the same time. Start with something simple — going for a walk in your favorite park, exploring a new part of the city by foot, or trying a new fruit or vegetable you’re unfamiliar with at the local farmer’s market. Enjoying the healthy activity will make you want to do it again!

PS: Here’s a fun game we play while traveling… anytime you see a new fruit at the market, immediately purchase it and eat it on the spot. It’s led to so many unique experiences and the locals often get a kick out of it 🙂
